The Azores are a Portuguese archipelago located in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 1,500 kilometers west of mainland Portugal. The Azores have several airports that connect the different islands of the archipelago. João Paulo II Airport (PDL), located on the island of São Miguel, is the largest airport and busiest in the Azores. It is located near the capital, Ponta Delgada, and offers international and domestic flights. Lajes Airport (TER), located on the island of Terceira, is an important military and civilian airport. It offers international and national flights, being a strategic stopover for transatlantic flights between Europe and North America. Santa Maria Airport (SMA), is located on the island of Santa Maria and is another airport with international and domestic flights. Like Lajes, it is an important stopover for transatlantic flights. Horta Airport (HOR), located on the island of Faial, this airport offers domestic flights and some seasonal international flights. It is known for its location facing the iconic Pico Mountain, on Pico Island.
In addition to these main airports, the other islands of the archipelago, such as Pico, São Jorge, Graciosa, Flores, and Corvo, also have smaller airports that operate domestic flights and sometimes international seasonal flights.
